The first question people ask is if audio can be added to Slides. The answer is yes, but in a limited capacity. You cannot add music or audio that will play continuously throughout a slide presentation. There is a workaround for this which I'll explain later. You can add music to a single slide that will play for the duration of that slide.
To add music to a single slide you need to first have your audio available through YouTube, in Google Drive, or hosted on a publically accessible server.
-
On the slide you want to add audio, select Insert - Add video. (If you have the option to "Add audio", see instructions below.)
-
Select the video that contains the audio you want to embed.
-
If you want the audio to play automatically and the controller for the audio to not be seen, then place the video outside of the slide. It will still be a part of the slide, but not visible. In this example, I've placed the video in the bottom left-hand corner outside of the slide.
-
Next click on Format options…
-
Now click on "Video playback" found in the top right-hand corner of the new options window and then click on the "Autoplay when presenting." option. You can also adjust which portion of the audio you would like to be heard by selecting the start and stop time of the video.
The audio will now automatically play when the slide is opened and the controller for the audio will not be seen.
If you have the option to "Add audio" to a slide. You simply select that option and then select the file you want to use. Disclaimer - I do not have this option available to me yet and therefore I cannot demonstrate the rest of the steps. Once I have the option, I will update these instructions.
If you need the music to play continuously through a presentation, then you have two options.
-
If your presentation is not automated (does not advance on its own), then you will need to have the audio open and playing in a separate tab in your browser. This will allow the audio to be heard and the clicking/changing of the slides will not affect the audio.
-
If your presentation is automated, then you will need to record the presentation while the audio is playing in separate tab. You can do this with Screencastify which is a free, easy, and yet powerful Chrome extension that records the video and audio that is on your computer. Here's a link that explains it quickly. Screencastify Website. This will allow you to record the automated Slides presentation as well as the audio that you would like to include with the Slides.
I hope this answers your questions and good luck with your project!
